Our Providers

Drs. Ellison, Cheek, Evangelist, Oliver, McWhirter, and Heiss provide medical care in the hospital and office setting. Hospital services are provided at The Medical Center and Doctors Hospital in Columbus*. They participate in the Pediatric After Hours Program providing acute care on weeknights, weekends and holidays.

Drs. Carroll and Roberts work with us in providing office based care to our acutely ill patients. They typically see patients that are sick and need to be seen on the same day.

Thomas W. Ellison, MD, FAAP

Dr. Ellison received his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Tennessee in 1974 and his Medical Doctorate there in 1977. He spent his residency and training at the Brook Army Medical Center, Fort San in Houston, Texas. Dr. Ellison is a Board Certified Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics. He has served the Columbus area since 1983 and in private practice since 1987.

He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics, Georgia Chapter, the Medical Association of Georgia and the Muscogee County Medical Society. He serves on the Pediatrics Faculty at Doctors Hospital and Medical Center. Dr. Ellison served as Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserves.

Dr. Ellison enjoys woodworking, golf and spending time with his family. He is married to Charlene Wolfe Ellison and has two sons, John and Matthew, and a daughter Laura.

   

Kathryn K. Cheek, MD, FAAP

Dr. Cheek is a native of Farmville, North Carolina and moved to Columbus in 1985. She earned her Bachelor of Science, Medical Technology from the University of North Carolina. She received her Masters in Health Education from The Medical College of Georgia in Augusta where she also earned her Medical Doctorate. Dr. Cheek served her residency at Emory University, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. She was also chief resident of Pediatrics at Emory University.

Dr. Cheek was board certified as a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics in 1987 and re-certified in 2000. She has been practicing in Columbus since 1986.

She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics (Georgia Chapter), the Medical Association of Georgia, and the Muscogee County Medical Society. Dr. Cheek serves on the Pediatric Faculty at Doctors Hospital and Medical Center.

Her hobbies include reading, hiking and spending time helping out with her children's activities. She is married to Dr. Ben Cheek, OB/GYN and the mother of Holly, Hugh(twins), and A.J.

   

Jennifer R. Evangelist, MD, FAAP

Dr. Evangelist received her Bachelor of Science in Biology/Pre-Med from Georgia Southern University. She then went on to earn her Medical Doctorate from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. She completed her pediatric residency at The University of Florida (Shands Hospital).

She is a Board Certified Diplomat of The American Academy of Pediatrics and serves on the Pediatric Faculty at Doctors Hospital and Medical Center.

Dr. Evangelist is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics (Georgia Chapter), the Medical Association of Georgia and the Muscogee County Medical Society. She served as Chief of Pediatrics, Doctors Hospital, 2002-2004

She is married, to Brad Evangelist and has three sons, Joseph, Jacob and Abraham, and a daughter Arabella.

   

Mark C. Oliver, MD, FAAP

Dr. Oliver is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and has been practicing in Columbus since July 2000. He received his Bachelor of Art/Pre-Med from the University of Notre Dame and his Medical Doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Oliver completed his residency at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He is a Board Certified Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics and serves on the Pediatrics Faculty at Doctors Hospital and Medical Center.

Dr. Oliver is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics (Georgia Chapter), the Medical Association of Georgia and the Muscogee County Medical Society.

His hobbies include golf, chess and spending time with his family. Dr. Oliver has four sons Charlie, Matthew, Nicholas and Benjamin.

   

Susan McWhirter, MD, FAAP

Dr. McWhirter is a native of Glen Burnie, Maryland and has been practicing in Columbus since 2001. She received her Bachelor of Science in Zoology from the University of Maryland and her Medical Doctorate from Emory University in Atlanta. She completed her residency at Emory University, Children's Health Care of Atlanta and Grady Hospital. She was Pediatric Chief Resident, Clinical Instructor at Emory University.

Dr. McWhirter is a Board Certified Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics and serves on the Pediatrics Faculty at Doctors Hospital and Medical Center.

She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics (Georgia Chapter), the Medical Association of Georgia and the Muscogee County Medical Society.

She has a daughter, Sophia and a son, Thomas.

   

Erik A. Heiss, MD, FAAP

Dr. Heiss received his Bachelors of Science in Microbiology from Bringham Young University in Provo, Utah in 2004. He received his Master’s in Public Health and Medical Doctorate from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia in 2009. He completed his Pediatric Residency July 2012 at Emory University.

Dr. Heiss is a Board Certified Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics. He serves on the Pediatric Faculty of The Medical Center and Doctors Hospital.

Dr. Heiss is a member of American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Board of Pediatrics (Georgia Chapter), the Medical Association of Georgia and the Muscogee County Medical Society.

He is married to L’Anita Heiss and has 3 children Abigail, Anne and Samuel.

   

Kathleen T. Roberts, MD, FAAP

Dr. Roberts is a native of Columbus and returned to her hometown after practicing at Egleston Treatment Center in Atlanta for eight years. She received her Medical Doctorate from Duke University and completed her residency at Emory University.

She is a Board Certified Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics. Dr. Roberts is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics (Georgia Chapter) and the Medical Association of Georgia. She has a special interest in developmental problems, school problems and ADD/ADHD.

   

Cheryl K. Carroll, MD

Dr. Carroll is a native of Columbus and has been practicing here since 1997. She earned her Bachelor of Science and her Medical Doctorate from the University of South Alabama. Dr. Carroll completed her Pediatric Residency at the University of South Alabama and her Neonatal Fellowship at the University of North Carolina.

She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics (Georgia Chapter), the Medical Association of Georgia and the Muscogee County Medical Society. Dr. Carroll enjoys Bible studies and gardening. She is married to Banks Carroll, M.D., (Family Practice Physician) and has three sons, Thomas, Wilson and Andrew.

   

Lindsey A. Bellamy, D.O., F.A.A.P.

Dr. Bellamy received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama. She then received her Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri. She completed her Pediatric Residency at the University of Texas, San Antonio.

Dr. Bellamy is a Board Certified Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics and is a member of the Muscogee County Medical Society.

Dr. Bellamy enjoys spending time with her family. She is the proud wife of Dr. Michael Bellamy, Emergency Medicine Physician, who is currently serving in the U.S. Army at Fort Benning, Georgia. She is also the proud mother of a daughter, Caroline.

This team of certified Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners are here to support the physicians in providing care for your children. They provide well child checkups and same day appointments for acute care. The physicians of RiverTown Pediatrics are confident they will provide the skilled and professional care your children deserve.

Brent Smith, PA-C

Born in Edison, Georgia, Brent Smith has been practicing in Columbus since 2007. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Georgia. He then attended the University of Georgia and later transferred to Emory Univeristy where he obtained his Masters in Medical Science. Before coming on staff at RiverTown, Brent taught various high school science classes and coached wrestling, baseball, and football in Dahlonega and Gainesville, Georgia and also in Woodstock, Virginia.

Brent is a member of the Georgia Association of Physician Assistants, American Academy of Physician Assistants, and the Society for Physician Assistants in Pediatrics. he is also NCCPA board certified.

Brent is married to Renee Smith. Hobbies include golf, fishing, and attending University of Georgia football games. Go Dawgs! 

   

Kamie D. Theobald, F.N.P

After moving back to her hometown of Phenix City in 2000, Kamie worked with mother’s and special care babies at Doctors Hospital for 10 years. During that time she completed her Bachelors of Nursing from Auburn University-Montgomery in 2007, and her Masters of Nursing from Troy University in 2009. She is a ANCC board certified Family Nurse Practitioner.

Kamie has worked at Pediatric After Hours, serving the acute needs of children in our community since 2009. She joined the Rivertown staff in October of 2010. Kamie is married to David Theobald. Together they have three children: Jessica, Lucas, and Lyndsey, as well as one grandchild, Logan. Her hobbies include reading, spending time on Lake Harding with family and friends, as well as building Gingerbread houses.

   

Tabatha D. Paulson, F.N.P

Tabatha has held many roles in the medical community. She became a registered nurse in 2003 while attending Southern Union College. She obtained her Bachelors of Nursing from Troy University in 2006, advancing to the Masters of Nursing-Family Nurse Practitioner at Troy University in 2009. During this time she worked at Columbus Regional Hospital in acute care nursing. Tabatha joined the Rivertown staff in November of 2011. She is an ANCC board certified Family Nurse Practitioner. Tabatha has two children Colton and Callie. Her hobbies include spending time at home with family and decorating.
