Sunburns
Sunburns are very common this time of year. With increased outdoor activities and vacations children are exposed to the sun for longer periods of time. Sunburns can vary in severity and are most commonly classified as a first and second degree sunburn. A first degree sunburn damages only the outer layer of skin and typically appears red and tender to touch. This typically heals on its own within a few days. A second degree sunburn damages both the outer layer of skin and the layer beneath. This burn can be a bit more painful and blisters often develop. Do not pop the blisters and keep the area clean. If the sunburn is significant we suggest a visit in our office.
Remember prevention is key this summer! If your child is 6 month or older we suggest the use of sunscreen SPF 50 with regular reapplication. We also suggest long sleeved swim shirts with SPF and hats.
